Vick = Out

Michael Vick is out of Prison/Sports Illustrated Cover with Michael Vick Dog

Michael Vick is out of prison today and the dogosphere is on overdrive about it:

  • The Bark examines ESPN's coverage & muses about what Vick's meeting with the Humane Society really mean
  • ESPN's coverage
  • Huff Po weighs in
  • NPR examines the much-needed PR winVick will need out of the gate
  • Bad Rap does it the classy way, with a make-you-tear-up video of a rehabilitated Vick dog, the lovely, lovely Jhumpa and others on CNN by way of Anderson Cooper (I can't think of a better advertisement for how lovely pits are than seeing Jhumpa with all her doggie friends)

There's a lot of noise about Vick possibly working with the Humane Society in some way and his wish to lead a new kind of life in the wake of his 23 months in prison.

We've been closely following all the good work folks like Bad Rap have done to rehabilitate many of the Michael Vick dogs and find homes for them.  For those of us who work with dogs every day, this has been both gut-wrenching (the dog fighting) and awe-inspiring (the work of teams like Bad Rap.)

Now that he's out, folks in the dog community seem to fall into two camps - those who are skeptical at best about Vick turning over a new leaf and those who are willing to set their anger aside and take him at his word that he's changed.

What do you think?

You Can Now (Yes! Now!) Shop Online at Pussy & Pooch

Eicrateforfido
One of the best downtown pet shops recently added a shop online feature to their site and we are thrilled about it!  Even though we live downtown and can head over there whenever we like, we couldn't ever properly blog about or highlight any of their products without...links. And pictures!  So all this week we'll be featuring products that you can purchase online at Pussy & Pooch.

First up: The oh so funky, would look so much better in our house than the regular ones, eiCrate.  We've seen it in person and we're sold.  Love the contoured edges, love the bed shape, love the concept of dogs curling around it instead of the hard edges (they love their donut beds for a reason), love it all. Only downside: our dogs won't fit in it.  But if your fido is 4 - 40lbs and you are tired of that ugly crate in the corner that you've tried unsuccessfully to camouflage in a dozen ways, this is the crate for you.  Add a cool stretchy cover (no more blankets/sheets/whathaveyou) and you're set!

Adopt a BBD Today

Adopt a Big Black Dog Today!
For those of us who work with rescue organizations every day, there is a sad, sad phrase that is often uttered about the single most difficult type of dogs to find homes for: big black dogs.  No matter how lovely the dog is, no matter how perfect the temperament, many potential adoptive families overlook big black dogs at shelters all across the country in favor of dogs that have more unique coloring (blue! red! orange with stripes! white with brown spots!).  We were reminded of this again today when reading a great article in The Bark about this very issue:

“Please don’t overlook our black dogs,” rescue groups pleaded on their home pages above pictures of Rottweilers, Chows and Labs sporting bright bandanas. One shelter’s website just came right out with the grim truth: “The general public is not aware of how doomed black dogs are when they are brought to a pound.”

We experienced this same harsh reality when we took in two lovely black dogs, Roz & Nellie.  They were both older, both shaggy, both big, both black.  We've luckily found wonderful homes for both of them, but we were so disheartened to see people dismiss them immediately because of their color that we're glad to see some attention being focused on this issue.

Tamara Delaney's Black Pearl Dogs is a wonderful tribute to black dogs the world over and is an excellent resource for understanding the problem and finding a perfect black dog to add to your family. This issue is so close to our hearts (we have a little black pit bull after all!) that we've decided to feature a weekly roundup of local BBDs that need homes.

Here are this week's BBDs...do what you can to give them the home they deserve:

Learn About Wine/Much Love Event a Success

Muchlovelearnaboutwinecassb
The Walk Fido crew had a great time yesterday at the Learn About Wine charity event for Much Love Animal Rescue. Some fantastic wineries and great restaurants were on hand to serve wine and food to LA dog-lovers of all stripes.  All told, the silent auction (with some outstanding items, like the Foxen Pinot magnum from Sea Smoke Vineyard that we missed out on) brought in solid funds for a very worthy cause and many event participants had a chance to see downtown in a new light.

Walk Fido met many concerned fido owners who are interested in behavior training, regular walking, or just learning how to socialize their dog on a regular basis.  We met some sweethearts yesterday too - Petunia, the french bulldog/pug mix (a frug?) was a sweetie and Buster, the Cass vineyard pit bull, was so lovely to all dogs and was so chill we told the owner again and again how Buster was easily the most well-behaved pup of the day. Pepsi also crept into our hearts. He's a little pup chow mix who needs both a foster and a permanent home, so head on over to Much Love and check him out. We're pretty sure you'll fall in love too!

We were so busy chatting up fido owners and smooching fidos that we didn't take proper event photos - but we've uploaded our meager shot list at left so check it out. We'll update the blog once other attendees have posted photos.  There were many enviable digital Nikons slung around countless necks, so some amazing shots of the event have to be out there somewhere!

An Outing Every Dog Can Get Behind

Learnaboutwinemuchloveevent
We're thrilled beyond measure to have a fanastic charity event taking place only steps away from the Walk Fido office later this afternoon! Ian Blackburn of Learn About Wine has partnered with Much Love Animal Rescue to combine our favorite things: wine, fabulous food from local restaurants (did we mention Wurstkuche?) dogs and dog-loving Angelenos!

Come join us as we celebrate downtown, taste some intruiguing wines, and help raise money for a very worthwhile cause that is close to our hearts!  The event will feature a silent auction and a lucky fido-lover can win a free behavior consultation from Walk Fido!

The event is from 2 - 5pm and promises to be a great time for fidos and owners alike. You can drop your dogs off at Lofty Dog to frolic and play while you sip wine and mingle.  Stop by the Walk Fido table while you're there to say hello, talk about dog behavior, and enjoy an afternoon in the Arts District for a good cause.  See you out there!

Fido Holidays & A Furry New Year

Thank You All for a Wonderful Year!
It has been a busy year at Walk Fido and we are so excited about the many things we have planned for all of our furry friends in 2009.  The downtown dog scene has exploded this year and a number of excellent new services have opened to make sure all our fido needs are met.  We will be highlighting many of these great businesses and the people who run them in the next few months and we'll have a gaggle of news and coverage each week. It promises to be a great year. Are you ready?

Have a wonderful, safe, joyous New Year's and we look forward to working with you in the year to come!

Walk Fido Thanks You
As the season for giving thanks draws near, we want to thank all of you for your continued support, kind words, lovely referrals and the ongoing dialogue about how to make sure our fidos are the best fidos they can be!  All of us here at Walk Fido wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Fido Food: Make it from Scratch or Kibble It Up?

Dog Food Safety, Pet Food Trends & the Right Food for FidoWe have been struggling to find the right dog food for our own dogs and client dogs for years.  Just when we've found the perfect food (dogs have firm poops and don't vomit immediately after eating), something goes awry and we have to start all over again.  Our English bulldog Oscar is allergic to chicken (as are many bully breeds) and Stella is the queen of diahrrea.  We know - it's awful but it's true. Some dogs need to stay away from lamb while others thrive on it. Some of the top tier foods are so packed with veggies our dogs would never get in the wild that they have constant diahrrea. We're not the only ones - our clients have trouble too.

We have tracked ingredients in nearly every brand of dog food, we've experimented with homemade soups for Great Danes and special rice and cottage cheese for those who can't handle much more. We've done fresh veggies and cooked meat, we've done frozen patties and kibble. We've done organic, holistic, vegan and not. We've done it all. Even if a program works for a few weeks or, if we're lucky, a few months, something invariably goes wrong. The food is recalled, one of our dogs starts getting sick, someone begins getting weird bumps, and we're back to square one.

So Marion Nestle's latest article in The Bark  - The Future of Pet Food - was of great interest to us. While attending the Global Pet Expo in San Diego, Nestle noticed some interesting things about how pet food products are evolving (or not):

The Good

  • Kiss the Melamine Mess Goodbye - More and more dog food companies are quick to point out that for them, all products from China are a no-no. Many are still doing it and are backing up their decisions by adding in more safety checks.  We say: do your research and buy local if you can.

The Bad

  • Buzzword Bingo is Alive and Well & Misleading - Weight loss, joint health, heart health, anti-this and anti-that words and phrases are all over packaging for treats, kibble, patties, supplements, you name it. The problem is that many nutritional claims are either unfounded, unproven, erroneous or downright false.
  • Treats Are on the Rise - We're an anti-treat household for the most part, preferring to have dogs resopnd correctly to requests because they want to behave, not because they want a treat.  One of the saddest things to see are overweight dogs that have hip and joint problems when they can get to a healthy weight just by cutting out treats and increasing exercise.  Instead, many owners place their dogs on diet foods and continue giving treats throughout the day.
  • Greenwashing Gets Goofy - Large, commercial pet food companies are seeing the increasing interest in green, natural products that are good for Fido and good for the environment.  Why is this in the "bad" section then?  Because instead of actually bettering their products or reducing their effect on our planet, they're simply marketing the same old commercial products as green.  Bad. Very bad.

The Odd

  • Doggie Bottled Water is The Next Big Thing - "For whom?", we'd ask, as we cannot imagine anyone - with all the research about the impact plastic bottles have on the earth as well as the harm that water in plastics over a period of time can do - buying cases of bottled water for their dogs. These doggie bottles of water contain herbs, vitamins, minerals and supplements. Think Smart Water for Fido.  Would you buy them? Sounds like a stretch to us...

...but of course, we're still trying everything we can to get into a "solid" routine! So while none of this solves our immediate food crisis (Oscar is now on kibble and beef raw patties, Stella is on kibble with lamb raw medallions and fresh broccoli and carrots), it does remind us why we fret over dog food as much as we do. There's big money in it for the manufacturers and it's up to every owner to closely examine what they're feeding Fido.

Football Season & Fido

Walk Fido Football Season, Football Gear for FidoFootball season is here and that means new gear - for the players, the fantasy football players, dog owners and of course, the dogs themselves. While we've not seen too many tricked-out doggie clients or decked out darlings downtown, we have certainly seen a sharp increase in doggie merch that is all about your team - pro football or college, there are plenty of shops that cater to outfitting your dog with your teams logos in just about every conceivable way.

As Angelenos without a football team (le sigh) to call our own (again), we prefer this more generic nod to the season...available at Muttropolis for $19.00
